Kevin Burke 'A simple explanation' (Letters 23 August), berates Trump for multiple failings in his private life. Has Mr Burke forgotten that we have had four years of Trump as president and nary a Brownshirt to be seen? If dodgy personal behaviour is an impediment to high political office in the US, we should bear in mind John Kennedy and his brother Robert, whose dalliances with Marilyn Monroe are legendary. The youngest Kennedy brother Edward, left a young woman (Mary-Jo Kopechne) to drown in his car while he hightailed it home. Bill Clinton will always be associated with Monica Lewinsky and their dalliances were right in the Oval Office. And of course the sainted FDR kept a mistress, who posed as his carer right under the nose of wife Eleanor. All the above-mentioned men were Democrats.
